Expedition Whisky

The whisky that went to the South Pole and back

On September 11th 2018, The Ardgowan Distillery Company launched Ardgowan Expedition, its very first limited edition bottling.

Strategy

Create a pack design solution that evokes the excitement of an epic adventure by a team of committed environmentalists.

Idea

Use innovative materials in a completely unexpected way to create an intriguing, exciting and aspirational pack design.

Prior to establishing the distillery, the founder members of the distillery team had been involved in renewable energy, working in wind, wave, hydro and solar projects. Polar explorer Robert Swan asked the team to develop a zero-carbon snow melter that would be lightweight, robust and inexpensive to accompany him and his son Barney on the South Pole Energy Challenge. The Challenge was developed to show the world it was possible to travel and survive in the earth’s most inhospitable environment without the use the Earth’s resources.

To share in Robert’s historic trek, Ardgowan Distillery Company asked him to take a bottle of very special aged single malt to the South Pole which now forms part of the Ardgowan Expedition commemorative blend of malts. A small sample was uncorked at the Pole to toast their epic trip.

Clickworks were tasked with designing packaging for the commemorative blend that would be distinctive and unusual while evoking this epic adventure.
Innovative techniques were specially developed for the packaging, which at its heart, has a beautiful glass bottle enveloped in a metallic quartz coating to evoke explorers flasks. Elegant, minimal typography was developed with a clean, contemporary tone. A beautiful embossed leather neck-tag is embellished with metal studs and is embossed with a silhouette of Antarctica.

The holding case is an elegant wooden box with recessed panels designed to evoke packing crates. Warm wooden surfaces are laser etched and screen-printed. The case opens out to reveal the story of the expedition and to display the precious bottle on an elegant wooden plinth.
